What Can Happen in Just One Week? Tyler’s Musical Madness Story

When Musical Madness was announced last summer, Tyler was all in.

He had always loved Shrek and was excited for the chance to be part of the musical. After several productions at Shine, he was no stranger to the stage—but this week would be different.

Like many students, Tyler came into Musical Madness ready to learn, grow, and have fun.

The week was full of rehearsals, choreography, music, and new friendships—but it was also energizing.

“It was busy, but fun and exciting,” his mom shared. “He loved being with friends he already knew and making new ones too.”

And then came a moment that made this experience especially meaningful.

Tyler was cast as Shrek.

“He was shocked when the cast list came out! The realization that he had grown into a place of being considered for and trusted with a lead role was very exciting for him. His confidence in performing grew.”

What makes Musical Madness so unique is how quickly students are immersed in the full process of putting on a show. In just one week, they take on new challenges, build skills, and step into opportunities that help them grow—both onstage and off.

“He loved how it all came together so quickly. Compared to longer productions, it gave him a really quick sense of accomplishment.”

For Tyler’s family, Shine has become more than just a place to perform.

“We love the friends we've made at Shine—not just for our kids, but as parents too.”

Through volunteering, rehearsals, and performances, families become part of something bigger.

“It truly seems to be an environment where kids and families support each other and cheer each other on, and value being a part of something bigger, together.”

This will be Tyler’s fourth year participating in Musical Madness—a reflection of just how impactful the experience has been.

Families love Musical Madness because it’s a fun way to experience theatre, a place where students can grow quickly and confidently, and a program that delivers a high-quality production in just one week.

“It's a great, low commitment way to let your child try theatre,” Tyler’s mom says. “I've been super impressed by the production level of the one-week camp. It's amazing how it all comes together in such a short time period.”

And of course, there are always a few unforgettable memories along the way.

“It seemed like he was green forever,” his mom laughed. “The face paint we used stuck around, and for a few weeks after Shrek ended, he still had a noticeable green tinge to his face and hair.”

Whether your student is brand new to theatre or already loves the stage, Musical Madness is a place where growth happens quickly and confidence follows. In just one week, students build skills, friendships, and memories that last far beyond the final curtain.

We invite you to join us for Musical Madness this summer and give your child a week they’ll never forget.
